hell no.... unless he is installing a ford 9" Im eventually going to rebuild mine, but only if the cost can be kept under $500 (witch is very doable even with a few upgrades). Sounds like your mechanic is either not very experienced in writing estimates or thinks he has found himself a sucker.

You can buy a master rebuild kit for $125, new gears for $175, and a brand new posi for $375. If you wanted a used posi that's about $100. You can then pick up all the tools needed for about $300 or so. This means you can do it yourself for a lot less.
