Default Axle limits

How much can stock 28 spline axles hold on the 8.5" 10 bolt??? I am not concerned about any of the other internals. For me, those are all pretty much bullet proof. I did not want to spring $$ for new axles. They are special order and big $$ because of my non c-clip. I have 295 tires but don't "plan" to run drag radials. What kind of 60' will I get before they break??

Well, I can speak to this. I have made countless passes in the 1.6s. But, recently I added nitrous and made 1 1.51 60' and I can see some twist in the left side axle splines.

So, I just ordered some Moser 30 spline axles and changed my 28 spline spider gears to 30 spline in my Eaton Posi.

So, your 28 splines were bone stock...Not the Mosers?? What type of price did they give you for new Mosers if you don't mind me asking??

My rearend is from a 72 Skylark.

It sounds like 1.6 is about the limit. I won't be hitting that on 295 MT all season radials. ;-)

Yes, I was running stock 45 year old 28 spline axles. As for the price on Moser's, yours will be cheaper than mine. You have common c-clip axles while mine are bolt-in Buick axles. Mine are special order and yours will be off the shelf. I want to say you can buy yours for like $3xx.00 a pair. However, most everyone will tell you to go c-clip eliminator for safety. I don't know what that costs.

My '72 Skylark rearend has bolt-in axles, not c-clip. That is why I was curious what the Moser price was. I believe Buick and Olds were the only ones to do this in '71 & '72 with the 8.5" ring gear.

Thanks for all the info. Just out of curiosity, do you have the Stage 1 Extreme Auto. 200-4R??

I guess I assumed by your signature that you had a Chevy rear. You should call Jim Mitscke at JDRace.com. He does a lot of Buick guys stuff, so he knows the exact custom specs on the axles you need. If you just call Moser direct, you have to take measurements and go through the whole custom order process. Jim already has that spec'd out. He can also swap your spiders if you are not comfortable doing that yourself.

I do have the Stage 1 trans from Extreme. And yes, I have exceeded the recommended HP level for that unit LOL.
