someone explain gears to me
what i want to know is why someone would want to change from stock gears and going to 4.10s? a car has say 380 hp & 360 torque, does 12.00s in the 1/4, runs a 295/45/17 inch tire and is also a 6 speed car. this is to try to settle an argument im having.
all im really finding is stuff for automatics.
Let's use a 325hp/350tq engine with a 6 speed in 4th gear as example.
350 ft.lbs. into 3.42s' gives 1197 ft.lbs. to the axles.
350 ft.lbs. into 4.10s' gives 1435 ft.lbs. to the axles.
A 21% increase in torque to the pavement.
Will make that 325hp car 'feel' like it has 393hp.
Stronger acceleration !

i think that is what i was looking for.
what about the tune? i know changing gears can lower your mpg and throw off your speedo. what im wondering is can i just put in the gears an go?

SO the lower the gear ratio(4.10)the faster you get to use up the available HP so the car acellerates faster. BUT only to a certain point, unfortueately you are gonna run out of engine HP and TQ BEFORE you run out of road or 1/4 or what ever you are racing on. So you must gear it so you have optimized the available HP and TQ across the entire distance.
Understand you only have 300hp no matter how you gear it that will never change! The only thing you can change is how fast you use and that is through the gearing.
Good rule of thumb is 3.42s for automatics on the street AND 3.73 for 6 speeds manuals. Can't beat these ratios for all around performance on the street.
Hard core street gearing would be 3.73 automatic and 4.11 manual

Also, 4.11's gears in a 6spd fbody is hardly "Hard Core"
. granted i was limited to the stock rev limiter and stock tire size (for now) but i think im goin to 3.73's or 3.90's.
