Heres the deal. Its a '99 Z28 M6 3.42's, all stock. My rear end is making a horrible noise. It sounds like a caliper is sticking, but neither side is. And its not side specific. Its has the exact sound like the brakes are binding, grinding, holding friction but there not. I loosend up the parking brake thinking it was that, i have to pull the handle almost all the way up to them to engage, so i really dont think its that. I pulled the rear cover, no unusual metal wearings at all. BTW, it seems to have a Worm gear setup to the posi?? never seen that before, only dealt with clutch type. Someone please help me, its driving me nuts everytime i drive the car.

I've just bought a 98 TA auto and it's doing the same thing. There is a squeak from the passenger side rear brakes every time the wheel turns. I thought it was a warped rotor but it's not. My mechanic reckons the shafts are actually moving from side to side due to worn bearings and causing the rotor to rub the brake pad each time. Also I have the whining noise which seems so common on F bodies and on sharp turns taken slowly the whole rear end sounds really horrible - creaking and groaning. It seems that I might be looking at new ring gear and pinion and new diff bearings. Anyone else know if this seems right????
Rear end torn apart and diff side bearings replaced along with inner and outer wheel bearings. This cured the squeaking every time the wheel turned but the gringing noise is still there. Put the car on axle stands and put it in gear - rear wheel on passenger side is buckled, so this could be the cause. I have also heard that the rear axle shafts and axle casing on 4th gens are pretty weak and prone to bending. Maybe mine has slid sideways into a curb or something. Check this out
