Rear end problems - 4th Gear Lock?

Rear end problems - 4th Gear Lock? I took my 2001 SS out for the last time before winter yesterday and was hitting it pretty hard on my way home WOT through 3rd gear was smooth and then I went for 4th gear and a terrible thing happened, it seemed as if the wheels stopped moving and loud banging noises came from the rear end so I let off right away when it happened. I buzzed it through the gears a couple more times not at WOT but half way in it and everything seemed smooth?? Any idea what the hell could have happened?
