Default When you hook, stuff breaks!

Went to the track last night (first time at this track, first attempt at a pass) did a good burnout on the Nitto's... Hooked like a **** and then clack clack clack clack!! Twisted the damn driveshaft. I honestly did not expect this to break so I have never really done research on it before. I've done a bit of looking now and a PST is way outta budget right now, but that's all I've found. Is it really either a stock used one for $100 or a PST for $300ish?! I would like to get something a little beefier than stock but $300 is out of range right now. Anybody got something a bit stronger than stock that won't necessarily murder my wallet? Didn't see much on running a Steel DS, anybody got experience with that? Also going to get a DS loop, looking at UMI/BMR any reason why one is better?

They hooked alright:

That's too bad, usually when they let go they put nasty punctures in the floor, and dent up the exhaust system. I don't know of anything cheaper than the PST 3.0" steel driveshaft, you might get lucky and find a used one. Bob

You're very lucky that's all it did. $300 might seem like a lot, but replacing a Trans, rear, exhaust, fixing a few holes in your floor are way worse. They can and will break much more violently than yours. Either spend the money on the Pst or hold out for a nice used one.

Well looks like the Torque Arm is gone too... Car isn't my daily and doesn't get driven much so I have some time to look out for one, maybe work it up to get a steel PST. Also found the MWC Safety loop, man that thing looks like it fits super tight to the body. I'll be ordering that soon.

I have a aluminum shaft I just pulled out of my m6 if you want another one just to drive and get around. Also have another trq arm too I'd let both go cheap. Sucks it broke in your first pass. Good thing it didn't come through the floor board though.

You could grab a stock steel shaft from a LT1 car.

Ironically I was just thinking about scraping my stock steel one and stock Tq arm out of my 93z. If you were closer I'd say come get them!

Thanks for the offer fellas! Luckily the wife said I might as well upgrade so it won't happen again! So I'll be upgrading my Torque arm with a Founders and I'll be calling a local DS shop tomorrow and see if they can build me one, if its way out of budget then I'll definitely look for a steel one from a LT1. I had no idea LT1 cars came with a steel DS.

Looks like the TA has been cracking for a while. The fracture on the bottom is not fresh

FWIW, 3rd gens have a common steel DS as well. Narrower shaft, slightly thicker walls but almost all need a balance

Front and rear DS loops are always a good idea on the track and dynos

Auto LS1s' with 2.73s' came with a steel driveshaft.
Whenever there was a vibration problem with those,TSBs' recommended replacement with an aluminum one,so evidently balancing on the steel driveshafts isn't that good.

I noticed this also when I was looking back at the pics, I got under the car prior to heading to the track and didn't notice that so I'm guessing it was a "tight" crack but then my focus wasn't on cracks lol I was just making sure all the bolts were tight and nothing was loose

Nice carnage. Go aftermarket or to a driveshaft shop, even the stock steel ones arent that great.

There is a company in your town which will make you one similar to a Denny's HD unit for cheap.

I bought a 3.5" diameter 56" long with new yoke installed and Spicer solid u joints for $230 shipped. High speed balanced, powder coated, and everything.

I called them and the dude that I spoke to claimed that my driveshaft probably had a dent from a rock and that's why it broke. He also claimed that these driveshaft are pretty strong and it wouldn't have broke otherwise... then he said he would get me a stock one and do new u-joints on it for a super low price of $285, oh and he was "hooking me up" from the regular $400 you're the 5th person that recommends this place though. I'm going to call back and see if I get somebody else to speak too, thanks man!

^^^That guy sounds like an idiot. Honestly, most average people would never break a driveshaft though so it may not be their field of expertise.
