locked rearend help!!

locked rearend help!! didn't even drive my camaro five miles and the rearend locked up on me. I popped the differential cover off to no fluid in the housing.. when the car is on the ground it won't move but jacked up in neutral the wheels turn over.
my question is if I but a new pinion and gear set will that fix my problem?
and would 3.73 gears be the way to go instead of the stock 2.73?

You'd need a new carrier going from 2.73 to 3.73 as the carrier series changes between them. But, as it is you may need a new carrier regardless. And all new bearings. With no gear oil in it you may have damaged the axle bearings as well as they use the gear oil for lubrication. Pull the axles and inspect that too, don't want to go through putting a couple hundred into the rear and find out you have to take it apart again to replace the axles as well.
Don't forget that you'd want to tune your car for the gear change also, so shift points, speedometer, etc are all correct.
Not sure how much it all will cost to do this. It may be easier/cheaper to drop an entire used rear into it, or just bite the bullet and upgrade the rear to something stronger.

Potential damage to:ring&pinion,pinion bearings,Auburn carrier spider gears,carrier bearings,axle bearings,axle shafts bearing surfaces. Pick up a complete 'pull-out' rearend assembly from a 98-02 LS1 Camaro/Firebird.
98s' had Auburn posi,99-02 had Torsen posi. Replacement rearend has to be compatible with cars' channel system. 3 channel-ABS only,4 channel-ABS and TC.
