Really messed up on the backlash.... So a friend and I just rebuilt my 10 bolt and put a new set of motive 4.10s in. However, in my drunken retardation at 4am, I told him to set the backlash to .050 .
Naturally, when we test drove it the gears had a ton of whine. There was nothing else that could be done that night since it was morning already, so it was driven back home. Now i've got roughly 40-50 miles on a car with gears set to .050 backlash. I'll have to drive another 40 miles to get back to his garage since he's the one with the lift, dial ind., etc.
My question is, do you think the gear set is ruined? Is that enough driving to set in a terrible wear pattern or is possible to just reshim it and go on?

a 050" backlash might have put them so far out of the area where they would normally be contacting,changing the lash to proper might bring contact to where it should be and it might be still at a new unused area of the teeth. Good Luck.
