Default potential rear end problem

yesterday I changed the fluid in my differential. I bought 2 quarts of gear oil, a new gasket, and the GM limited slip additive. My car is a 2001 Z28 with the stock 2.73 gears with 30,000 miles on the odometer. I jacked up the car, placed an oil pan on the ground under the differential, and removed the bolts. The oil started to drain slowly and then I pulled the cover off of the car (very carefully) and the rest of the oil drained out. I then grabbed a razor blade and scraped off the old gasket from the differential housing and the differential cover as well. To clean the inside of the cover I used some carb/throttle body cleaner and wiped it with a rag.

I wanted to clean the magnet(i think it's a magnet) that stuck to the inside of the cover. It had some sludge on it that I wiped off. Once I had it cleaned up, I noticed that it has a good sized crack in it! I was at my parent's house so I didn't have my digital camera or I would have taken some pictures, but it's roughly about 1/8" wide and 3/4" long on one of the edges of the magnet. I needed to get the car back together so I could get back to my house (the car is my daily driver) so I put it back together and refilled it. It drives no problem, but this can't be good. any advice?

anyone know if this is a ticking bomb or if I am OK? anyone else heard of this problem?

It is just a magnet and should stay stuck to the cover with or without a crack. It's job is just to collect the minute metal particles that float around in the lube.

but if the magnet is chipped then where did the chip go?

if it cracked off wouldn't it float around in there and damage the gears?

A magnet isn't going to float around too long inside a rear end housing before it finds something to stick to.
