bent axle housing
I have a 1999 Pontiac Firebird Ta with a bent axle housing. I'm trying to get one from the junk yard but the tell me that the 3.8 housing is different than the 5.7 housing. I have a 4 channel rear end now. I know the difference between the 3 and the 4 channel. My question is can I use a 3.8 axle housing or are they different than the 5.7 housing? I'm disabled and can't afford to go with anything but stock rear end. Does anybody know the difference between the 3.8 and the 5.7 housings? as long as it is 4 channel housing assembly? Thanks Bent..

98-02(can't speak about pre-98 as I don't know) V6 and V8 housings are identical except for the sensor hole for 3 channel rears. Most V6s' had 3.08 gear on an open(non-posi) carrier. Some V6s' that had the performance package option had 3.23 and/or 3.42 gears with posi. Auburns 'posi' were used for 98,Torsens 'posi' were used for 99-02.

Yes you are right now the 3:42 but I put a 3:73 in it and then I got ran off the road and it bent my axle housing so I couldn't find a good 4 channel rear end housing so I got a three channel and used my backing plates and axles with a 4:10 and complete rebuild it and now I'm happy because I have a new GM performance LS3 with 525 hp from the dealership and had it installed by them so I have a three year 100000 mile warranty on it at any Gm dealership. The engine was only 7600.00 and I could not have built it for that.
