Differences in 10 bolts I’m about to put 4.10s in a 2000 Trans Am. The housing has been changed but not sure the year it was from. Everywhere I look for gear install kits it shows 82-98 as one bearing kit and 99 up as another. What is the difference or are there any?
No differences in housings. The difference is concerning the carrier. 98s' and earlier had Auburn carriers, 99s' and later had Torsen carriers. The carriers used the same carrier bearings, so there should not be a 'year' category. BUT, there was a pinion seal change, but not between 98 and 99.
From the layout parts catalog, 98-99 had GM seal 26026792. 99s had two, evidently a change during the production run, 26026792 and 12471523. 01 -02 used 12471523. Most kits have the wrong seal and you go to the dealer with your original seal to get a matching proper seal.
Since you would have a Torsen carrier, 4.10s' require a modified 'paddle'. SLP had one, but no longer available.

I’m not sure the year the rearend is out of but the guy that owns the car supposedly has found a carrier but not sure which it is. If the seal is the only difference between kits I can just find one after the fact like you said. Right now it’s a open differential. I’m assuming the car had a aftermarket rear at one point and they have used a V6 housing. On the torsens I’ve always ground the paddle/block in the center down to clear the ring gear teeth.
V6 and V8 housings are identical. Internals are the same except most V6s' came with open, a small percentage had posi with 3.23/3.42 gearing.
