putting a spool in a moser 12 bolt???
I want to replace my posi with a spool in my moser 12bolt- I called moser and they said 99% of the axles don't use c-clip eliminators- they said they use some sort of a "axle retainer" like 9 bolts. they said they don't even stock axles that use c-clips- so my question is has anyone done this conversion- and if so what all do I need- assuming I have a 4 series carrier-
I switched my 33 spline Moser over to a spool also. When I called Moser they recommended the Strange spool over the spool Moser sells for some odd reason. Something about the splines not matching correctly.
The Moser 33 spline rearend doesn't use c-clips. The backing plates actually hold the axle in. They use a 9 inch sealed axle bearing with a o-ring around the outside of the bearing. I've had mine in the car for over two years with no problems at all. Knock on wood !
You will need:
Spool
gears
installation kit....shims,bearings,bolts,etc.
solid pinion spacer...optional
Fluid

If your Moser rear came with a 4-series gear/carrier, then you can use the Moser spool.
If your Moser rear came with a 3-series gear/carrier, then you need to use the Strange spool. The cut on the axle splines are different.
If you bought your Moser new, then you should have no doubt about what's in there. If you bought it used, you should check first. There would be a spacer between the ring and the posi unit if it's got a 4-series gear with a 3-series carrier. Or, 3-series ring gears are like 1/4" thicker than 4-series ring gears.
