Default 8.8 ABS - Tone ring thickness?

Hey guys,

Have my 8.8 all ready to go together, but working on a tone ring to use stock ABS sensor... I have a cad? file from Hiltsy, but it doesn't mention the thickness needed...

I see 2 thickness measurements mentioned for 2 or 3 series carrier for stock 10 bolts - but I have no idea for the 8.8 - anyone have ideas?
2 series: .230" (15/64)
3 series: .540" (17/32)
Have sent some PM's to people as well, will update this with info

Thanks!

Edit - so I think i'm just being dumb - this gets put on the carrier - so I measured my new one (FPRacing T-2R) and its .315"

The 3 series reluctor was necessitated to be longer/extended because of the shorter distance between pinion centerline and ring gear flange mounting surface.
The thickness of the 2 series should be adequate as long as it's centered to the sensor and a same distance away from the sensor.

Right, centered on the carrier makes sense for the 2 series thickness.. A local machine shop wants close to 300 bux to make it, so I'm trying not to mess up

I don't have an easy way to accurately measure the OD of the carrier - but eyeballing it, it's right around 7". This is a replacement diff for stock 8.8 units, so i'm guessing it's the same as all others. This matches up with the cad file I have which has the ID of the ring at 6.9880 (outer at 8.9390 and 106 teeth to match the gm sensor i'll re-use)

The machine shop said they have .25" plate, so i'll have them just use that and no milling for thickness... this has it less than 1mm on each side, shouldn't matter here at all i'm guessing.

Could you comment on material? they stock aluminium and stainless steel

Thanks!

The rings I have are magnetic and they will corrode to get a rust surface patina.. They break the magnetic field (in pulses) of the sensor.
So I assume aluminum will not create a signal with the sensor. 300 series stainless steel has no magnetism, 400 series stainless steel has weak magnetism/strong magnetism depending upon the specific alloy.

I see reference to magnetic materials in here now as well - https://www.practicalmachinist.com/v...-rings-298501/

1018 Cold Rolled Steel in particular - have passed this along to the MS.

Cheers

I'm picking up a 2x2x.25" plate of mild steel today from a local metal place - 50 dollars + tax, and will bring it to the machine shop for cutting - update later with more info

Got my ring back today - I had the machine shop exclude the key/notch on the inner diameter as my carrier doesn't have that - we'll just tack it in-place instead.

How much of a press fit onto the carrier is designed into it ?
Once it's on at it's proper place, drill a hole (neither the ring or carrier is hardened) on the diameter where they meet and then put/press a pin in the hole. Tacking it in place seems too permanent.

Being that the ring is only 1/4" thick, the pin would be short but probably a 3/8" long pin would work as 1/8" sticking out shouldn't affect anything.
