Gear pattern input
The contact patch seems small to me. Pinion shims are about .08 in total I forget exactly. Backlash is .0125.
I took it back apart to check the pinion bearing and replace the crush sleeve again. It whined under light to no throttle.
I appreciate any tips.
4.56s in the 10 bolt, I've been running 4.56s' in my 98Z for many years, behind an A4. What's your tranny, stick or auto ?
I see you had to taper shave the ring gear teeth to get the torsen paddle in. Mines an Eaton carrier that I had to do that to.
Look at my comment in post #4 then look at the pics. The 'carry-over' compound is perfect for evaluating.

I don't know how I ended up on the path that lead to so much pinion shim but when I disassembled it I had almost 0.100 worth of shims. Put together a setup to get a rough measurement of the pinion depth, matched that to the gears spec with .048 worth of shims, installed a new pinion bearing and got a good and clear pattern that I was happy with with .012 backlash.
Thanks for chiming in FirstYrLS1Z
