gear ratio alright so i’m thinking about getting some 3.73 gears i have 3.23 right now my 2001 trans am has 45,000 miles on it do i need to get a rebuild kit or can i just get the ring and pinion gear and differential seal etc. also what is a good place to buy some and what brand is the best thank you.
Personally, I wouldn't waste my time on the factory 10-bolt and just put in a 9" or S60. But if you are sticking w/ the 10-bolt, you might as well replace all bearings and seals while you have it apart. I'm sure Summit or Jegs has all the parts you need.
^^^ that. If there's nothing wrong with the parts in the rear end and you want the 3.73s' for a performance gain, get a good torque converter instead. Performance gain of a converter is much larger than the performance gain of going from 3.23s' to 3.73s'.
But, don't get a off-the-shelf in stock $400 converter as that would be wasting your money. A good converter's gonna cost in the $700-800 range.
I'm running a Yank SS3600 and it's perfectly driveable in city traffic. I've given rides (even let them drive) to feel a good converter and its' driveability.
If you get a good converter, I'd doubt that you'd still want to do a gear change.
I'm sure others will post in for recommendations for a good converter.
