Default 8.5” 10 bolt Useable????

Hello-

I bought a 10 bolt out of a mid 70s camaro (bought two whole cars, didn’t check it) for my 58 Chevy Apache-L92/4L80. Opened it up to find it covered in surface rust.


I assume it was under water at some point. It rolls free with a rough spot but is still needs to be fully cleaned out. Think this could be run? The 9”/4 link upgrade isn’t in the budget yet.

Looks more like condensation really.
I wouldn't be scared to clean it and run it, is the ring and pinion gear pitted deep any? rust on the bearings?

Hadn’t thought about that. Did come out of Houston. No telling how long it was sitting. No, don’t really see any pitting at all.

So it depends on your project. I've done a few 10 bolt upgrades on my 2nd gen LS swaps.
1. Upgrade to a posi that you can run 30 spline axles. I like and use Tru Track posi and Moser axles.
2. Weld the axle tubes to the center section. Locally the welding shop I use use nickel arc rod with a controlled cool down since you are welding cast iron to mild steel.
3. And again depending on your project upgrade the pinion yoke to 1350 u-joints.

It doesn't get any more clear than this.
Otherwise, pull the axles, plug the tubes and fill it with some liquid evaporust stuff. Your call.
