Default pinion seal differences?

Would someone be so kind as to explain the differences between old and new rear pinion seal types? I want to make sure I didnt screw up royally.

The pinion seal that came out of my car was a two piece, one tapped into the rear differential housing, and the other part was on the yoke.

The bearing that came with my install kit was one piece, obviously the part that gets hammered into the diff housing, but it was too small to fit over the yoke If I reused the yoke seal, so I took it off.

It seems to fit perfectly and hasnt leaked yet after taking a slow 10 mile testdrive. Do I need to pull the yoke off and replace the seal with a brand new two piece seal?

Thanks,
-Tony

The seal itself is 1 piece that goes in the housing. No part of the seal is on the yoke. Sounds like the old seal you removed may have just been torn when you removed it.

Nope, definately not torn. Its more like a second pinion oil seal, but it fits onto the yoke. The yoke seal has a metal sleeve that increases the OD of the yoke which is why it would not fit, and thats why I pried off the yoke seal so that I could use the 1 piece seal.

It looks like somewhere between 01 and 02 the yoke was revised to incorporate this 2 piece seal. Most install kits still include the 1 piece seal.

I'm thinking that im gonna have to buy both pieces of the two piece seal, however most places only sell the part that presses into the differential housing. If I have to, i may just buy a new yoke, since I like the new seal design better. Maybe Ill wait till it starts leaking before I do anything.

yes there is two different seals. a 1st and 2nd desing. you have the 2nd desing 2 piece style. you will have to go to the dealer and get it since most parts stores dont have a clue what you need. the diamater is different on them, the 2nd desing being bigger then the first.

speaking of that, i had a freind that did his own gears and put the 2nd desing seal on his 1st desing yoke. after a short trip on the freeway, all the gear fluid came out and burnt on the muffler. after fixing it, the car still smelled like **** for months.

Since I pried out the yoke piece, can I just run around with the older one piece seal (smaller diameter)? Its a perfect fit now.

I've had mine replaced twice by the dealership, and instead of paying 90 bucks to have it done again, I bought the $18 seal, and plan to do it myslef.

The seal I got today only had one seal in the package, with a small spring wrapped arround it....

Is the double better?

LeddySS98, check the pinion. If it's the new revision, It probably has what looks like some sort of seal on it as well. If its the older (98 - 00 1/2) then you only have the choice of a one seal. You would have to replace the pinion to use the bigger seal.
