Jeep Rear axle problems I have a 1984 Jeep CJ-7 with a just finished 350 chevy conversion. Tried to take it for a test drive, the drive shaft turns when i put it in gear but the wheels don't. By the way as if you couldn't tell i'm not a mechanic(carpenter). I did the conversion by asking lots of questions and doing alot of web surfing. It may be a stupid question but here goes anyway. Is my rearend fried?
No, just that portion can be replaced. Jack up the rear so the tires are off the ground. Put the car in neutral. Turn one of the tires by hand, the other one should turn. If it doesn't, your differential is broken.

I did this same conversion on my CJ7. Snapped the ring gear after about a month. Put another stock rearend in, and snapped an axle about another month later. I now have a Dana 60 rearend out of a dually waiting for install, along with a Dana 44 closed knuckle front end. Both axles will also be getting the spring over conversion.
Don't waste your time and money on the stock rearend! Find a
dana 44 or stronger and you will be much better off!
