Gear whine
Gear whine Had 373 gears put in 2-3 weeks ago along with a new carrier because it had 273's stock. I was told to drive easy for 500 miles and did so with no noise. After 500 miles gears started whining a lot. Very loud.
Took it back to the shop. They said gears may be bad due to improper break-in, however, they would try to adjust them. While the car was there, they dyno tuned it. Got the car back and they said noise was normal. I don't see how it could be normal if they didn't make noise for the first 500 miles. Is it just me?

My 4.11 Motive's were set up using the pinion depth markings as per instructions and they whined also (**** this ****). I reinstalled OEM 3.73's (S-10 pickup truck) and goodbye whine.
Aftermarket performance gears are cut for "strength" not silent running.
OEM gears are machined for quite operation and less for strength.

I just installed 3.73s the other day, and it was fairly quiet at first, but now it's a little louder. It's semi-audible with the radio off, but I don't think it's that noticable.
Now, does gear whine mean that they gears are BAD? Because if it's only a noise and doesn't mean anything, I could care less.

A few days ago, the speed shop had the whining gears replaced by the company they got the gears from. Apparently, they used a new technique of installing the gears. They put them in and back them out slightly. The gears are quiet now.
