rear-end clanking

rear-end clanking every time my automatic car downshifts from 2nd to first it makes this clanking noise...or popping noise...only once though...or if i'm going slow in a parking lot and it shifts to second it will do it as well...what is the deal...rear-end broken? 
If the u joints check out ok, get it up on jackstands with the emergency brake on and tranny in neutral and twist the driveshaft back and forth with your hands....engine not running of course. Notice the slack/slop in the rear end? Gotta love GM quality.
