Question The damnedist noise????

Ok I have gear whine due to the exceccive back lash(0.018), but I'm trying to figure out what this noise is. It happens only when making tight, slow right or left hand turns. It kind of sounds like the parking brakes are dragging something fierce, but it isn't(removed the pads from both sides). It's kind of like a low growning/grindding noise comming mostly from the left hand side.
I think it's the carrier getting ready to go out, but am wondering if it is something else???

mine does the same thing.....I think it is the posi unit going bad....but dont take my word for it because I am just guessing. My '98 has been doing it for about 4 months and I also have a weird sound "like flat spotted tire" that I think is a bearing going bad. I'm going to take it to the shop as soon as I get a chance......I will let you know what they say about the "dragging" if noone else can tell you what the problem is.

Figured it out. It is the EATON posi doing it. Specifically the clutches. They are wearing out and frayed causing the groaning sound. Just have to rebuild it with new clutches.

Not necessarily, could be lube... You prolly need to add the GM posi additive, then drive around in circles to the left, then the right... Might work and save ya some money.

I am as soon as I have the time. As most everyone knows Craig is a pain in the *** to deal with. As far as the lube is concerened, I put 2 bottles in with no luck. I then disassembled it far enough to pull the carrier out and can see the problem. I going to have Craig replace the whole thing plus fix whatever else needs replacing all at once. Since I have had I have had a bad vibration problem the use to start right around 90 mph , but is now down to around 65-70. I live about 140 south of dallas and am only going to drive it that far once. I have had the drive shaft re-balanced rwice so it must be something else in the rear-end. It is not the trans or flexplate either (replaced both).

He tried to tell me once that there is nothing else inside it that could cause the vibration and I had to call bull-****. Wish me luck.
