Default Tips on carreir install

I am installng a new carrier into my 10 bolt, with the stock ring and pinion. I was wondering how every one got these things back in. There's such a tight fit that I'm having a hell of a time getting it in. Is there some kind of housing seperating tool, or do people just use a pry bar?

Do you try to force it in, you need a different set of shims!!! If you put it in that tight it will eat your carrier bearings within a month (or sooner depending on how tight it is). Measure the thichness of your shims you currently have (if any) and get some smaller ones from the dealership/sponser of site, etc.

If you lived in georgia I'd give you a bunch of them from my old 10-bolt rebuilding days.

You should have to lightly tap it in with a hammer, lightly. The only ones that need a housing spreader are mostly Dana's.

I didn't change the gearing so I don't believe I would need a different set of shims, but I did change the carrier itself. I went from the stock torsen, to the auburn limited slip. I was assuming I could still use the stock shims but I may be wrong. When trying to tap the one of the shims in it cracked in half, so now I need a new one, currently I'm just trying to get a shim assortment and go from there. Thanks for all the replies.

sually you have to use a pry-bar to get them out, and a good heavy mallet to tap them in place putting them together.....WJ
