Default Ok to use regular 1 1/4" socket?

I'm going to be swapping out my pinion seal to hopefully stop the leaking, but I can't seem to find the 1 1/4" impact socket, just the regular type. Will it break if it's not the impact type? I've called all the local hardware places, and even sears doesn't have that size in impact sockets. Where did you guys find yours?

A thin wall socket may split, but if thats all you have what are you gonna do. Its not so bad when you are removing it, but when you put it back on and have to crush the new sleeve it takes a lot of torque. You can get the sleeve started in a vise first, just crush it half way to what the old sleeve was. Or use a solid spacer.

easy way to do it is to mark the pinion nut and put it back in the same spot when you tighten it, that way you dont need a new crush sleeve.

But as for the socket just be careful and dont hold your hand on it when tighteneing or loosesning - it can split and cut your hand up like a spinning razor blade..

Safety Glasses!

My impact couldn't remove the nut on my 12 bolt. I had to get creative with pry and breaker bars. If that's the case, be careful not to pull the car off the jackstands (I had the rear out of my car).

Good Luck

Thanks for the advice guys, I'll be careful if I decide to use the thin wall socket. I'm still trying to find a place that sells the impact socket, so hopefully someone out there does have it.

kp, that is one sick looking SS and a crazy *** cam!

I've used a regular Craftsman 1/2" drive socket at least 20 times on mine w/o breaking it. Plus, if it does crack, take it back and get a new one from Sears.
