M6 guys with gears step in
I need to select some gearring for my car and i have a couple questions. I know just about everyone says to get the 4:10's. But for a car that will never see the track and is a dialy driver....isnt that a bit much? I understand that the overdrive will make it hardly noticeable...but wont it make 1 and 2 gear pretty much worthless on the street....even more so with cam? I was thikning 3:73 would make more since... for daily driver that might get into some highway play every now and then.
input?

I gotta vote for 4.10. They are great on the street and easy to drive on the highway. 1st ans 2nd will be shorter gears but still very useable on the street. 6th on the highway will actually pull when needed.
I do have a 12 bolt though.

I have the 4.10's and absolutely love them. I agree that 1st and 2nd are short but you get used to it. Mine is not a daily driver, i only take it out on the weekend to race it at the local track. They are not too bad on the highway.

4.10's. Great on the street. Shift 1-2-3-4 when you're in a hurry. Shift 1-3-5 or even 1-4-6 if your just enjoying the scenery. A few months ago I was making the same decision. I decided to go with a 12 bolt and 4.10's. I figured I could always go down to 3.73's if a didn't like the 4.10's. I thought it would be a waste to go with 3.73's and never know what the 4.10's were like. It turned out to be a wise chioce. Good luck with your decision.

I got the 4.10s in my moser and I would say I do and don't like them. For a torquey N2O setup I think a 3.73 would have been better. With my 224/228 on a 114LCA I can spin her up to 7K and still make power so the 4.10 are nice in that aspect. DD'ing the car gets annoying sometimes but like before you just got to get used to doing a 1-3-5 shift or you'll drive yourself crazy.

I agree with AgentOrange. 4.10s are fun ...but unless you have good traction on the street, it is too much gear a lot of times. The tires spin too easy...end up going slower. Also, if the engine is modified at all, you may run out of MPH at the track and have to shift into 5th.
I'm glad I tried 4.10s, but I wouldn't do it again. Just too much gear IMO for these cars - they make great/broad torque...so they don't need the gear as much.

However, with my new cam, my rev limiter is pushed up to 7k, I shift around 6700 rpms, and I'm not even close to running out of gear on 4.11s.

Well, he might run out of gear. I too have heads/cam. 25" tall street tires (actual measured diameter).
My limiter is set at 6700 rpms. If you want to rev higher, you can get a couple more MPH.
Remember that the trap speed is averaged over a section at the end of the run, so actual MPH needed is higher than what shows on the timeslip.
With 4.10s, and a 25" tall tire, and a 6700 RPM limiter, you are pretty much reaching your limit of MPH in the high one-teens (11X mph).
