Default Eaton install questions...?

I will be buying my Eaton soon and installing myself.

I wanted some guidance before I start tearing things apart in a week or two.

Where do I get the carrier bearings? Do I really need new ones?
If not, can I just take them off with a three jaw puller, cook them in the oven, and slide them back on? ..... Will cooking it to 400+ degrees warp or destoy it?

Do I even need to touch the pinion?

How often do people actually need new shims going from a stock open diffy to an Eaton Posi?

How do I actually measure backlash? I've never even used a dial indicator.

Thanks, and please answer what you can.

Any local parts store. And yes.

Using new bearings, you can heat them if you are careful, but you better press them on since this is your first time.

No.

You will get different answer to this one because some times the oe shims will be right on and sometimes not even close. Have some shims on hand just in case.

Try this. http://www.randysringandpinion.com/d...koninstman.pdf

And check the backlash before you take the rear apart so you can put it back correctly. Do not try to tighten it up or anything. If it is running at .014 put it back at .014. If at .008, put it back at .008, etc.

Thanks for the heads up!

I work at Autozone, and we can't even get those bearings!

Are these the bearings I need?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...tem=7936271938
Is that a good price?

EDIT:
Thansk for the PDF file... it helped some!

I now understand that backlash is the amount of play in the ring gear while the pinion is locked in place. So, what do I do, put the tranny in park and try to roll the ring gear? I don't understand how I will check the play still... Maybe it is because I don't understand how to use the dial indicator? I mean... do I just place the edge of the dial indicator on the outisde of the ring gear and see how much the needle bounces?

Once I understand this I will be straight.

You can hold the pinion with one hand and gently "rock" the ring gear back and forth to check the amount of backlash. I think you got the idea, once you set the indicator up and give it a try it will be clearer for you.

Yes, set indicator on the outer edge of a ring gear tooth to measure.
