Default Do I really need a magnetic base dial indicator?

I was j/w if I need a magnetic base dial indicator for my diffy install. It would see that I could measure backlash with any dial indicator as long as I hold it firmly.

You can make a piece of strap metal that will bolt into one of the cover bolt holes as long as your dial indicator has a place to bolt it to. It has to be rigid though.

Make sure it doesn't move from the base, otherwise it will affect the backlash. I mean, this thing has to be on there good.
