Default 4.10s First Impressions...

Well I finally got the car together at 12:30 AM on Friday. Here is the DL: had to grind a couple teeth to fit the block in as the gear is thicker than stock. I did not want to spend an extra $170 for the SLP kit. Setting up a gear is a pain in the ***! Finding the right amount of shims to keep the carrier tight, then setting up the shims for lash without removing them completely so the carier is still tight, not to mention pinion depth. Once back together I ran it on jacks and sounded great. Took it for a little ride without problems. Went cruising on Sat night and squeezed it a little harder and holly ****! I put my GSCs back on so it would not hook well to allow for break in. I was always able to spin 1st and 2nd and chirp third, but not like this. Forget traction till 3rd. I was not beating the hell out of it and still traction is a big issue. I can't wait to see what she will do with the MT radials. Oh and the rev limiter come up much faster too. I still have the stock tune so I will have to get all that changed.

Everyone has to grind the 4.10's from what I've heard. I run Richmond's.

**** I had two threads running for weeks trying to find out how much to bring them down and no one had an answer. Most people did not know what the hell I was talking about.

Do you have to grind all 4:10's or just the Motives. I have a completly stock car right now but plan on doing plenty boltons starting with strengthening up the rear. It seems I should just buy a whole rear instead of trying to build the ten bolt. What do you guys think?

Depends on power and budget. I don't have a lot of power and have no budget, so strengthening the 10 bolt was my only option. If you are insecure and have the money (or are willing to wait to save) get a 9" or 12 bolt.

I was too scared to touch the teeth of the already wear 10 bolt ring and pinion (i know its the pinion thats weaker). I chose to mill down the paddle block instead and it has worked flawlessly.

With 4:10 gears in an otherwise factory 10 bolt do you have to have an aftermarket rearend cover?

it may help prolong the 10 bolts life by helping to keep the case from distorting, which misaligns the meshing of the ring and pinion gear teeth, which could potentially lead to premature gear failure.

It is a must in my opinion. I have one as well as Moser axles and welded tubes. Not to mention LCA brackets and a powder coat to make it look pretty.

sorry to bring this post back, but had a question. I have an 01 TA WS6-M6 and was wondering if people with a stock ws6-m6 could break the tires loose by just stabbing it in first, or even second. I cant break the tires loose in even fiorst with stock gears, i mean, it doesnt like smoke them or anything, maybe a little wheel spin, but minimal, and i cant even ge thtem to do more than a really nice chirp in second, slamming gears like a madman. Let me know, the power doesnt seem right to me.

how many rpm when you lay into it in first? the ls1 starts working good in the upper rpm's all i've ever had b-4 is ols school smalblocks and the ls1 compared to everything i've had really pulls up high i love it!!! just pulls and pulls .mine does the same thing to spin them good i have to be reved. just from a roll and punch it just a little spin but i like that too my last ride was a smallblock S-10 and forget about traction with that even with 315 DR it was the oppisite alot down low but would fall on it's face after 5K or so.

I have a still stock 2001 SS M6. From a roll in 1st it will barely spin the wheels. It just grabs and goes because the real torque is much higher up the tachometer. The non WS6 and non SS have narrower wheels and will spin more easily. If I rev it even a little and pop the clutch it will spin pretty easily.

When I bought my car it was bone stock and I could get the tires to roll pretty good into second gear. At times they would spin bad enough that I would have to let off from fish tailing. Did you check the simple things like the air filter and make sure your brakes aren't hanging up. Maybe some sort of restriction in your cats? Just some ideas.
