semi floating... full floating What exactly does full floating and semi floating mean. I know it has something to do with how the axle shaft is secured inside the axle tube... but thats it....
A full floating axle dosnt support any weight of the vehicle, and has no bearing contact. They are usually found in 1-ton up truck, sometimes in heavy 3/4 ton, and also in circle track cars. They are called "full-floating" because they do not support weight in the axle housing at all, they just float there (weightlessly) and are only used to transfer power to the wheels.
A semi-floating axle will either ride on a bearing, or have a bearing pressed on it at the wheel end. It also supports the weight of the vehicle on the flange and bearing. Also, just becuase a axle doesnt have c-clips does not make it full floating. A 9" ford is not a full floating axle.
