my trans spins in second???

my trans spins in second??? Has anyone had this problem? First gear is fine but the car won't shift unless you let off the pedal completely. Then in second it does nothing, straight to the rev limiter without pulling a bit. Let off again and it will go to 3rd and work fine and once again it does fine into OD if you lift the throttle. It's only a second gear problem, could it be clutchpacks?
The car is a stock 98 SS A4 with 56,000.

Re: my trans spins in second??? trans is done....something is broken, probably the band.....get it looked at....cheaper overall to just buy a built trans than to fix it and have it break again....

I "think" second gear is a band that clamps around a drum ... sounds like the friction material may be gone(just one possibility) ... depending on how long you plan to drive it like that and long it's been driven like that ... you may end up having to replacing the drum as well.
I'd get it looked at and rebuilt, if necessary, as soon as your budget allows ... I believe GM offers 3yrs/36,000mi warranties on their rebuilds ... you could save some labor cost installing it yourself if you don't mind the work.
