Default Australian Rearend????

Hi

I am looking at getting some parts from a guy wrecking a Firebird. It has the 1LE parts and he claims it also has the "bigger Australian" rearend. Is this reality, or is he bull-shitting me?

Thanks JA

He might be talking about a 9bolt. I have seen one and supposedly they are pretty strong but not as strong as a 12bolt.

I though all the Third Gen's with disc brakes were Aussie built!

I don't think they were that strong though.

I have seen an Australian rearend in pictures.. and boy are they nice

The 9 bolt is stronger than the 10 bolt. I think they were only made for a few years on the third gens.

"The Borg Warner rear end is sometimes referred to as 'the Aussie rear end' or the 'rear end down under'. Why? Simple. The Borg Warner 9 bolt rear end was manufactured by the Holden division of GM of Australia. A few (so I'm told) aftermarket companies make gears for this rearend, but I was only able to locate one such company. This company is mentioned in the Sept. 1999 issue of GMHTP and is Reider ((734)-946-1330)) which manufactures a set of 3.73 gears for this differential. Be warned! If you have a 9 bolt with a carrier that came from the factory with 2.77 gears, you will need to replace the carrier as it will not accept gears lower than a 3 series. If your carrier is factory equipped with gears such as 3.08, 3.23, etc., then you are OK and the 3.73s will slide right in."

Yeah, they exist. I think they are the 9 bolt. Stronger than the wimpy assed 10 bolts we have. I don't know if they are as strong as the 8.5 inch 10 bolt though.

I am not 100% sure, but the 10 bolt rear from our cars can fit in a 3rd gen without a problem.

Yeah they fit fine. I don't think those 9 bolts you are talking about are any stonger I've looked at them and taken the apart and if they are it is so minor it wouldn't even be worth the effort to find one. JMO though it is your money and more power to ya if it works for you. Good luck! The 8.5 are strong but the T/A mounting is what the real problem is I often thought of this I just don't want to try welding on the housing for them to break off like somt of the 8.8's were doing.

They were made 85-89 (some 90's had them). The gear ratios were 2.77, 3.27, 3.45

after i blew the my 2.73 drum rear in my 89 i found a 3.45 9 bolt disc and slaped it in and it was a nice rear but the posi went on it and they are really expensive so i found a 3.73 posi disk 10 bolt(10 bolts came with disk also) and put that in

tests have shown that the 9 bolt 7.75 ring gear compared to the 7.5 gear in the 10 bolts actually to be just as strong if not stronger then the 8.5 10 bolts
the great thing about the 9 bolt is no c-clips...the axles are bolt in like 9"ers which is awsome

i wish i would ahve kept and fixed it
