upgrading gears, what do i need? i am going to buy 3.42 gears to upgrade my current 2.73 gears. what do i need exactly to do the upgrade? do i just need the gears or is there more that i have to get when doing the upgrade?
what kind of results will i see with this upgrade?

I would get a master rebuild kit, and some nice tools, and depending on miles, maybe a new differential... why 3.42 and not 3.73? you should def notice a difference over 2.73...
If you have never done gears, have someone who ahs help... unless you are overly confident like myself

I did that swap by my self, 2.73--3.42, and everything turn out very well. No noise and a great diffrent in accelerate. I did that all the way, new Eaton and all bearings.

How much $$ do you think someone would spend on special tools to do this job. I'm planning on getting 3.73s to replace my 2.73s. I heard install costs a lot so I'm planning on doing it myself. Any certain brand name of gear that you would recommend or stay away from?
If you are upgrading from a 2.73 to a 3.42 or 3.73 you will need either a thick gear(for a 2 series case), a new diff case, or a ring gear spacer(not reccomended). Just upgrade to the Eaton if you have the cash. As far as tools- in/lb torque wrench, dial indicator, magnetic base, a really good impact if you are using a crush sleeve. You really dont need a pinion depth setting tool, you can use a caliper/micrometer to measure your shims and pinion.
