pinion bearing preload Ok I have been working on my rear. Installing some 3.73's I have my new bearings in and I adjusted the pinion bearing preload to 25 in. lbs. It seems to me that the pinion is a little tough to turn.(carrier isnt in yet) I read on one website that you should be able to spin it by hand and it should turn about 1 full turn before stopping. It doesnt do that for me. I didnt know since I am using new bearings that maybe it should be a little tighter. Any help is appreciated.
25 in/lbs rotational torque is what you are supposed to use for new bearings. It should turn easily, but it wont make one full turn with fresh bearings. Just make sure it is in/lbs and not ft/lbs.
Hit the pinion with a brass hammer on the gear and thread end a few times to seat the bearings,not real hard just firm.I shootfor 15 lbs/in rotation and some good locktite.I used a solid spacer/shim pack on my moser last time and worked great.
