Default Question about checking transmission fluid level?

Every time I have checked it it's after the car has been drove for a while and I end up checking it right after I get back, I go in and get a paper towel(to wipe off excess)come out and start it up, then check it, but it always seems to be all over the stick like if its too full but it looks like it's just running all over the stick??? how can you get a accurate reading? what if it it over filled? what would happen? I'm thinking that it's just hard to get a reading! I know very little about transmissions so I need some help here. <img src="gr_eek2.gif" border="0">

The tranny has to be warm. Let it idle, go through all the gears and let it sit for a minute in each gear and then put in park and check it. Dont turn off the car. That defeats the purpose. Too much fluid is just as bad as not enough.

If I'm reading your post correctly:

Try cleaning off the dipstick, then putting it back again, then taking it out again. It shouldn't be covered this time. You'll see a distinct line on the dipstick if you look at it at the right angle.

Your trans and oil dipsticks will always be covered until you clean them off the first time.

After you get back from running the car and you have it up to running temp, park on a nice level surface. Do not turn the car off. Go through all the gears one more time and stay in each gear for a little bit. Put the car back in park and remove the dipstick. Clean it off and wait a minute for any excess fluid to run back down the dipstick tube. Put the disptick back in, take it back out and you should be able to get a good reading on your fluid level.
