Default how about 10bolt 8.5

I have a friend that specializes in changing gears and was replacing a camaro nex to a denaly
because the 10 bolt 8.5 is bigger, I was daydreaming of puting the center of the big 10b (aparently is a limited slip, a lot of mechanical centrifugaly driven levers) with the sleeves for the axles from my camaro, custom axles, and custom yoke.
also to hold the central torque arm I plan to make a welded structure of 3/8 plate bolted to the rear bolt cover.

what do you think?

Ive heard a comment that about two years in the truck magazien came this swap (that was for a s10 btw)

the objectibe is to have a little stronger rear end CHEAPPPPPP!!!!!!

I guess the limiting factor here is how cheap you can get the labor and donor parts for. If you can do the fabrication yourself and find the parts from a junkyard, you should have no problems and might be able to strengthen your rear for a fraction of the cost of a 12-bolt or 9".

I was thinking about the same. I am just trying to figure out how to do the torque arm brackets. Would you do it like GM did on the GNX?

As with the ford 8.8 your problem is the torque arm mount. It seems to have proven pretty difficult to weld something onto the cast center section that will take the abuse of a hot car, especially a 6 speed.

I was going to try to fab an 8.5'' out of a truck to fit my car by welding my stock axle tubes to its center section a few inches out, then fabbing a torque arm bracket. But when i started to figure everything up, i was going to spend around $800 just on the axles, gears and carrier. That was before i had bought the rear itself or payed to have the torque arm mount welded on.

All in all i thought it was too risky to spend $1000+ on.

But if you had rear with a good posi and gear set already, it could be a different story for you.

wel the thing is that this friend of mine, "apparently" some time ago offered some reard end for free, when I got there, the scrap man already cleaned the "junk" section of his shop, (i dont know why) he profuselly apologized and ofered again some pretty new parts from donor cars. so the first payment will be CHEAP!

In regard to the torque arm, originally the freebie rear end housings was for me to experiment with welding in cast iron, to see how the weld might behave in term of permament distortion, alignment, and general strength of the whole thing....

but my best solution will be to bolt a Flange before or after, the RE cover, and then some structure welded to the flange and around the axles to the actual torque arm.

then 4.10 all the way!!!!!
