ford 9" gear setup....lash .00??
ford 9" gear setup....lash .00?? round 1. set up at 1.025 pinion depth as marked on new 4.11 motive gears. lash in instructions state .008-.012 i put at .009 contact pattern was perfect. WHINED BAD.
Round 2. changed to .004 and now sounds like a old police siren whaling.
how acurate is the marking on the pinion for the depth? 1.025? having it there my ring gear is about .001 from hitting the casting that holds the pinion bearing.
anyone experience anything similar?? what did you do?

I have set up motive gears in 9" centers at about .018 pinion shim is a good start, and .008 -.009 back lash. Just remember to add pinoin shim until you see the pattern round off without any sharp edges.
ok round 3 last night, i tried just using a .018 pinion shim, and the contact pattern looked alot better. lashed at around .005 and on accel it whined super bad, on decell it was quiet. So you think loosening the lash up some will make the accell whine go away? It was horrible, like a siren again.
The first time i put it together i had about .035 shims in the pinion. that braught it out to 1.025 like it said. It also made a sharp edge on the outside of the pinion gear.

My pinion depth wasn't dead on with the scribed depth either. Cant remember what I put it at though.
