spool = both axles locked, word is its good for straight lines, but bad for turning.

posi allows both wheels to spin at different speed but locks together going straight i think. Breakable.

spools aren't too bad for turning as long as it's not a tight turn. Posi's are usually quite a bit more money than a spool due to the simplicity of a spool and the complexity of a posi unit.

If you get the spool and ever have to push the car around, be sure to get a buddy or two to help you. They're a bear to move ESPECIALLY if you're turning it. My Dad runs a spool in his '67 Camaro, so I know firsthand how difficult they are to move around.

i thought if you drove on the street long enough with a spool you'll eventually break it as both axles are locked and when you turn it puts a lot of stress on it... But i've never had one so don't listen to me!

Nope i've been daily driving my spool for about 30k miles now and its great. yes when you turn it puts stress on the spool cause the tires are trying to turn at different speeds but the spool is ALOT stronger than the grip the tires have on the road. so instead of the spool getting damaged it just overcomes the grip of the tires and there fore you get tire chiping when you make a tight turn.

Why not just get a locker and have the best of both worlds?

They can sometimes get tricky on turns, especially in the rain (which is where you will notice it) They will lock up sometimes around a turn and you will have your hands full in the rain.

Lockers still break. A spool is ALOT cheaper than any posi and you can rest asured it will never break. i didn't spend 2 grand on a rear end for it to break down the line.

yeah they still break.... If you don't match the rear to the horsepower, but then again, if you dump the clutch on a locker 12 bolt at 5500 rpm with an 700 hp car, you deserve to have a broken rear end. hehe

If this person is even questioning a posi in their rear i am sure they are nowhere near the power to break a locker. Ask Pro Stock John how his 31 spline locker is holding up in his 9 second car.

Yep I agree with Juan. I streeted a spool with 9" in my old camaro. It wasnt bad at all. Best advice is to find someone in your area, go for a ride and you find out for yourself.

I like how when you go WOT on the road, the rear fish tailing was very managable. This was in a stalled auto with a trex also. Try that in a posi.

I went with a locker instead of a spool when I grenaded the Eaton posi in my 12 bolt. So far I'm happy with it... the locker and my McLeod Twin clutch and my 26" ET Streets are no longer enough tire to hold my car on a track launch, when I used to be able to launch it at 6k+. Now I gotta launch it around 4200 for it to find traction on the launch.

The locker isn't too bad to drive around on the street, thought it would be far worse than the Eaton was, and it isn't. Hardly noticeable really.

Tru Trac still hasnt proven itself yet. Could be just as frail as any other posi for all we know. Locker is a proven design. It is not nearly as bad as most people think. I urge anyone looking to get a new diff to drive in a car with one.

I have been struggling with what kind of high-bias posi to get - I hate spinning only one tire!! I thought about a spool for about 2 seconds but I did not think they were really streetable.

You guys running spools - don't you have a serious push problem during high-speed/performance driving on dry pavement? If so, could I just run a stiffer rear sway bar to reduce it?

Thanks,

Steve
