What's wrong? What does the noise sound like? Open it up and look at it.
Don't take this the wrong way, I'm not trying to flame you this just a general observation. People swap cams, replace water pumps etc.. with no problem, but when comes to the rear-end they act like it's black magic and should never be touched by a mere mortal.
All your gonna need is a few "special" tools to overhaul it, if it needs it.
How can a "shop" say $950; $950 for what exactly
The live-axle is not cutting edge tech. If you have a driveway and some jack stands check it out If looks like something you don't want to mess with then go the salvage yard route it will be a hell of a lot less than $950

TECH Fanatic
950-1050 is correct.... if you are replacing everything. And I mean everything.
But for just gears, bearings, axle bearings and tube seals.... I'd think more like 525-575.
Good shops will always quote "Worst case senario"... but also tell you that it would be in your best interest to come by for a test drive and possibly a quick inspection to get you closer to the real numbers.
