Default Using a Dial Indicator?

Any info on how this is done? I know that you place the base on the housing and use the other end to touch a point on the ring gear, but for what purpose? (Please don't say to measure is, we know that much)
What am I measuring the distance between?

The backlash (or 'play') between the ring and the pinion is what you use a dial indicator gauge for. Too tight or too slack is no good. The magnetic ones are easiest to use (as opposed to the kind that uses a vise grip). I mount the base onto the bottom of the rear end housing, and then configure the gauge until it is touching the ring gear. Move the ring gear back and forth with your hand and watch the indicator gauge...different manufacturers call for different specs. I set my richmonds up at .006" and my motives up at .008" per manufacturer suggestion.
