Default spooling the 10 bolt?

I'm scared of my 10 bolt, however i dont have the money yet for a built 12 or 9"...

Some ppl say that the weakness of the 10 bolt is the posi unit, if i change it for a spool would that hold it?

I'm not pushing 350whp+ yet.. but soon will be.. and i want to run some MT Drag Radials...

A 10 bolt can hold more power behind an A4 than if it was delivered by an M6. If I where you I'd get a girdle first and not change anything else until it breaks.

The main weak point of the 10 bolt is its size, and there is no way around that other than going bigger.

Dont waste your money on a 10 bolt in my opinion. Just start saving...

The small pinion in a 10 bolt with tall gears and the carrier are a weakness. If you have a 3.23 or even maybe a 3.42 the pinion is larger and stronger. With a spool the carrier limitation is eliminated. I would go for it unless you plan a big hp engine. With your A4, the right converter and a 3.23 gear it will be plenty strong.

Axles may become the weakness with a 3.23 spool 10 bolt.

yeah, i have 3.23 stock gears... no converter yet.. buying it this month... (something in the 4000 to 4400 range) and new 4.10 gears...

I was trying to not spend 2000usd on a rear, when i can spend that money on the engine... but i guess it will be a need anyway...

my only plan for next year is Cam (MS3). some spray, and all the safety needs...

My posi is shot and I didn't want to spend around $500 on a new one. How much is a spool and who sell's them for a 10 bolt? Thanks and sorry for jacking the thread!

Moser & Strange both sell spools.

I was considering getting a spool as well, but unless it's gonna get trailered to the track, I have been told by every single person I asked, from cz28.com threads to the tech guys at Strange & Moser, to everybody else & their moms that a spool on a street car is not a great idea. At the very least I'm told tires are not going to last long, and that at the other end of the spectrum it's going to be dangerous to drive. But if you're going to have a car strictly for the track, a spool is going to save you money & it weighs less than posi's.

Do you have a link for it? All I can find is for a 8.5. Thanks.

Sorry I lied. You're right, I can't find a spool for a 7.5" rear. If you want to keep it cheap, try a junk yard. That's where I'm trying to find a rear for my car right now. Good luck.

I would definitely not get a 4.10 gear with an automatic and loose converter. You will slow down not to mention that a 4.10 will shear the teeth in a 10 bolt with any good amount of torque. Get the right stall converter and that 3.23 is all you need. We have a 3.06 first gear in our tranny and a low gear is just not necessary for a street driven car. Look at my times with a 3.23 gear.

If a spool is not available then get an Eaton carrier. That's what I did when my carrier went out. It has held many 1.4? 60' launches.

Like the guys say, a spool is not what you want for street. Some have driven them on the street but I sure would not for safety and tire wear reasons.

If I am reading this correctly, you want to go with a 4000-4400 stall, 4.10's, & spray. In my opinion you are going to snap those axles like twigs. If you stick with street tires you may be ok because you will never be able to hook, but what use is that. SAVE THE MONEY FOR A NEW REAREND!!! If you do the engine mods you will be able to have fun with them for about one trip to the strip and then you will not have a car for six months or however long it takes you to save up for a new rearend. I have seen people that build the crap out of their motors, but there car makes it around the block and breaks something else. You need the infrastructure first to support the engine.

well, thats exactly why i was asking..

my car is a track car.. but i drive it.. everyday.. not that i need to.. but i like to...

being a part time work/student i can't get money fast, so i will just take things in a order of "need"... this question was to put a rear end or not on the "tomorrow" need...

Thanks everyone for their input...
