Default Paging Nine Ball

Hey Tony, As you know I'm doing the MTI head and cam package. I was going to leave the 342 gears in the car till I break them, but I'm told this is not a good ratio for my future combo. Your opinion? Thanks in advance,
Paul <img src="graemlins/gr_hail.gif" border="0" alt="[hail]" />

Why you trying to ask Tony? He couldn't find his ******* with both hands and a road map LOL....j/k <img src="gr_tounge.gif" border="0">

Honestly, 3:42's aren't good for a stock LS1, much less an heads/cam car. These motors make power up high, so logically you will need a gear to put you in that power band. These cars are also fat pigs, so they need gears to get them moving.

Depending on your cam selection, you will be reving around ~6300-6700 rpms. I would recommmend at least a 4:10 gear. If you are planning on spraying the car eventually, run a 28 inch tire and you'll be fine. A lot of guys are finding that 4:30's are working well for their setups, but those gears aren't for everybody. I wouldn't go any lower than a 4:10 myself.

BTW, your 10 bolt won't last long, especially with any other gear than stock. Plan on a couple of tow rides and a 12 bolt <img src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" border="0">

For that setup, 4.10 gears and 26" slicks would be the best combo to run. Someone probably told you to stick with the stock gears in order to not waste any money on the piece of **** stock rearend. The larger the ratio gear you go with, the weaker the gear set becomes due to the smaller pinion size. The stock gears would be the strongest, but hurt your 60' times alot.

My opinion? Suffer with the 3.42s and save your pennies for a 12-bolt. All the broken rearnends and tow-trucks I spent money on could have easily paid for a good rearend. The piece of mind is invaluabe also.

I hear you guys. I know I'm only fooling myself by thinking my rear will last a while. I have always launched the car easy {3500 rpm] and lived with shorts in the 1.95 range. I race the car full out pig {3650 with me in it } weight. If I told you how many passes I have on my orig. 3.42s youd think I was FOS! Maybe it will be making enough power after mods to hurt it on the 1-2 shift. I'm just hoping to buy a little time after all the coin I'm laying out right now.I just didn't know if the 3.42s would hurt me in the upper RPM band?
Thanks Paul <img src="gr_eek2.gif" border="0">
