Default Shifter doesn't auto-center nicely?

Ever since I had the tranny rebuilt (~16K miles ago, last week of March 2001)it's shifted notchy, and the stick won't auto-center real well. What I mean by that is if I have it in neutral and slide it left directly between 1st and 2nd, it seems to hesitate and/or catch on something. Same thing when sliding it to the right.

Usually it's only a hesitation - but getting the shifter into gear at an idle has progressively become worse the last few weeks. I've only had it to the track for ~10 passes in that period, and auto-x'ed just once.

I had a dealer R&R the tranny with updated GM parts, and they blamed the notchiness on the SPEC Stg2 clutch, and SPEC blamed it on a tranny tech who didn't know his elbow from, well, you get the idea. We had to use a McLeod shim to get the tranny to engage. Never had any holding problems with the SPEC, just issues getting it working with the OEM hydraulics (common story).

At any rate, I'm hoping to find a local tranny shop that will look at the entire setup and diagnose it completely and accurately without all the finger-pointing, dropping the tranny multiple times, spending hours (re)bleeding the slave/master, etc. Can I trust one of the common tranny shops to accurately diagnose/repair a T56 with a hydraulic clutch?

Anything simple I should be looking at before looking at another huge bill? I've got the 2001 master and I'm pretty sure I have the 288 slave. I had two 2001 slaves, one worked and one died. I do not have an adjustable master. Not interested in throwing cash at the car and seeing which sticks and which doesn't.

TIA...

Take the shim out and get an adjustable master cylinder. This will help a TON!!

Hey Jason...

Can you please elaborate on what specifically the adjustable master will address in my setup and what it won't address/fix?

Thanks!

Jim, is the clutch engaging/disengaging OK? I saw they had to install a shim in the slave cyl to get everything to work properly. The shim method SUCKS!! Everytime the clutch wears and it is time to reshim, you have to pull the tranny and replace shims. This can get $$$ over time. If you are still having issues with engaging/disengaging, you will mess your tranny up and need a rebuild in the future. I suggested the m/c because I think you will be better off in the long run with it.

The m/c won't help with the auto-center issues...

The adj. m/c will help cure notchy shifting, etc..
