If you're not going to be swapping the gears for 3.23, 3.73 or 4.10 gears, the carrier swap isn't really necessary. If you just need a new carrier for your 2.73 gears, then I'd stick with a 2-series carrier.
If you want to install 3.23, 3.73 or 4.10 gears and don't want thick gears, then you'll have upgrade to a 3-series carrier.
I went from a 2.73/2-series carrier to a 3.73/3-series carrier combo and couldn't be happier
I bought a really nice used 3-series carrier on ebay, and bought Motive 3.73 gears from Thunder Racing. If you go this route on your stock 10 bolt, I'd pick up a TA Performance diff girdle & stud kit too. I got mine from Thunder Racing as well.
While you've got it all apart, I'd also recommend a rebuild/installation kit too.
