Any hard launches or wheel hop under power? You may have chipped a tooth on a gear. Pull the cover and inspect it before you potentially do more damage.

I am having the same problem in my 2001 SS and I have been told all kinds of things like it was my Koni shocks <img border="0" title="" alt="[Roll Eyes]" src="images/icons/rolleyes.gif" /> my drive shaft and my rear end? It has made this noise just about ever since I first got it. I really notice it while doing slow U-turns. Let me know if you ever get this fixed cause the dealer over here dont know **** about these cars! I do think it is something with the rear end though.
