Default a new gear question

What's up all, I am about ready to do some gearing on my SS. All of the research I was able to pull polled mostly older cars with not too many mods. My car is a 2001(LS1) M6. I currently trap 111+ but have not been to a dyno. Have SLP longtubes, Corsa cat back, MAFT, SLP CAI&MAF, some suspension mods, a lid and some other goodies but I listed the most important ones(H/C and SC in da future!). My low end torque has been suffering since the header install, some 4.10's would really wake her up for sure, but I think with the power I have shown by the 111+ traps, street racing would be useless if not on DR's and a shift into 5th would be inevitable at the track. Just looking for some advice, Thanks again guys.

111 mph trap speeds are about 330-340 rwhp in a full weight M6. With a good launch (on slicks, with a 12-bolt rearend) you could run low 12s with that MPH.

You will not shift into 5th with 4.10s if you are only trapping 111 mph.

On the streets, 3.73s were always easier to launch and maintain control on spin. 4.10s were much harder to keep from spinning.

Thanks for the reply Tony, I guess 12-bolt is a nessacity with 4.10's and slicks, huh?!? What about 3.73's and slicks. I want to get slicks for the track, but I also want good street performance. With the 4.10's, my fear is short shifts and no traction on the street(I do occasionally line up with someone worth while). I do goto the track often, but she is my daily driver.

Spare yourself some misery and save that cash you were going to invest in the stock rearend and just get yourself a Moser 12-bolt with 4.10 gears.

I broke 4 stock rearends before wising up. At $500 parts+labor and $120 towing each, you do the math

NOTHING compares to having an M6 with a good clutch, rear, driveshaft, and slicks dumping at 6K and HOOKING at the track. That violent, wheel-pulling launch alone was worth the drivetrain upgrades. I didn't know what I was missing until now.

If I were to buy another M6 car, the FIRST mods I'd do are:

1. 12-bolt w/4.10
2. a proven clutch
3. a proven driveshaft
4. slicks/runners on draglites

That is what I'd do before I did an airbox lid!

Very wise advice. I knew the rear end purchase was coming, I just want the power now, I am sure you know how that is. I guess I will get the rear ILO just doing gears now. Since it will prob take a few months to stash some cash(a little more than $2k), do you think I would be on borrowed time if I bought some slicks for the track just to stay in practice(maybe 6 or 7 trips) or should I not do it with what I am putting down on the stock rear? Thanks again Tony, you have been very helpful!

Our stock rearends are junk. Only two things will prolong their life:

1. A slipping clutch
2. Spinning tires

wheelhop KILLS them, hard shifts with traction kills them, and hard launches kill them. You can risk it by slipping the clutch off the line on slicks, but don't attempt any dumps at higher rpm. Otherwise you'll be wasting money on repairing the glass jaw 7.5" haha.

Ask ANY 6-speed owner with an 11-second or quicker car what mod they love now. Most of us didn't put the rears in until we were already hauling ***, but now I wish I had done it sooner!
