Default Problems engaging 2nd gear

Saturday night, the first night I had my 98 TA I was driving around getting used to the Reverse Manual Valve Body that is in it. I noticed something wrong when I shifted to 2nd.I pulled up to my friends and noticed a burning smell. It smelled like wires touching or something like that. No one could find where it was coming from. So my husband took it out to see if he could figure out what was burning and what the problem I described was. He came back saying that 2nd gear wouldnt engage. If we upshifted or downshifted into it. We arent sure what the problem could be...anyone have any ideas???
