Default stock rear leaking?

i was under my car changing the fuel filter today, when i noticed that the rearend housing was wet with what i guess is gear oil. i have a summit support cover for the stock rear. i have never noticed any leakage with the cover....the oil was on the side where the driveshaft attaches and around the axle tubes. car has never been to the track but sees a little action on the street
what going on here? <img border="0" title="" alt="[Confused]" src="images/icons/confused.gif" />

If your car is lowered, its possible that the rear pinion seal is leaking.. its a common problem when lowering your car.. If your car isnt lowered.. Its still possible.. Or you may have overfilled your diff and its pukin out the vent... If it looks ok around the cover area.. then start looking at the pinion seal...

It's a common problem on these POS GM 10 bolts. It's not so much the pinion seal leaking around the yoke but the fluid seeps past the crappy sealant that GM uses in build up. The threads and the washer under the nut that holds the yoke to the pinion has to be sealed to prevent seapage. Whatever GM uses gets hard and brittle and then it starts to leak. Remove the nut and washer, apply black RTV and put back together. Problem solved. Good Luck.

One more simple thing to check is the fill plug. I had to use a couple 'a wraps of teflon tape around mine to keep it from weeping oil.
