Default 9" or 12 bolt and why....

When its time to do the rearend in my 2002, I will probably go 9" again (had a Moser 9" in my 2000) because of familarity, cost (I can build a 9" for about $1500 complete versus ~$2100-$2300 for a 12 bolt), and the fact that I have another daily driver (2002 Z71). However, if streetability and daily driveability were a concern, I would probably get a 12 bolt, just so I could keep the ABS and TCS. I am torn between the two.

What are your thoughts on this? What are/were your reasons for your particular choice, and the pros/cons for each? Thanks, Shawn

Well, i'm not sure what the differences in driveability are. But you CAN get a 9" with ABS and TCS. Hell, Moser offers it. If I had to do it again, I would've looked more heavily into the 9" With the 12bolt, you are stuck either with an Auburn, an Eaton, or a spool. You might be able to get a locker, not sure on that though. With the 9" there is like a dozen different posi's you can get. I guess it depends on what your goals for the car is. I'm very happy with my 12bolt, BTW.

9" all the way.. You can have your abs tcs setup in there and then get another center section later for some drag fun

I am going to set up a cs for the 1/8th and have one for the 1/4 already but what i want is a street setup as the spools are not that much fun on the corners.
Gotta try to find a 40 spline diff now

12-bolt...

Quieter (generally speaking.)
Lighter
Slightly more efficient
Doesn't effect ride height

9"...
Better range of gear ratio selection.
Quicker changes of ratios if you have an extra pre-setup center section.

Which one is stronger? Moser claims their 12-bolt is stronger than their 9" due to their built from scratch housing. I know my 12-bolt has been doing an excellent job for alot of 9 second passes. (BTW, I used to run a 9" in this car.)

The 9" raises the car by ~1". It did mine, and I've heard of it doing it to other cars, as well. The simple fix is to remove the black rubber "donut" on top of the coil spring (this is about 1" thick ), and wrap the spring in heater hose....

Removing the donut didn't lower it back enough for my tastes with the 9". It made it just right with the 12-bolt, however.

BTW, I'll move this to the Drivetrain section...
