410's in a 2000 SS A4

what do you guys think? worth getting? iv heard negative and positive about them .... just need a little bit more imput. thanks

We need a bit more input on your current mods and possible future expectation on the car. Personally on a a4 I wouldnt. Ill do 3.73's at most but again dependant on the combo, some may benefit from a 4.10 gears in the rear.

KingdingdongSS Jan 14, 2007 05:09 PM

its just stock... I havent done anything dealing with performance yet .... i decided to go suspension first because that was what was needed most on my car because everything is SHOT! .... plans for it though .... dont know yet havent really decided iv thought about putting a 427 in it at one point ..but who knows .... if worse comes to worse if i dont like the 427's i can get 373's further down the road...... could you tell me why you doint think it would be a good idea though?

SMOKKINU Jan 14, 2007 05:29 PM

if your doing this for a 10 bolt your wasting your money....

as to your question everyones avoiding, 4.10s in an A4 will work awsome. I'd get them before i got 3.73s.

Yea ooook :eyes:

The reason why I say this is due to the fact that is this a street car, strip car only or a combo DD. There are quite a few people with big displacement th400 cars running 4.10 on motor with n20 but even with the extra rpms allowed due to better valve trains they are running out of gear. The same will apply to a4 cars since your not supposed to go into OD in the 1/4.

For my m6 some have recommended 4.30's in the rear but I like to drive my car, ill go to the track but thats like 3-7 times out of the year, the rest is cruising. So you gotta match your gearing to the combo.

Actually gearing and stall and the last things that should be done, or at least the modder should know his intended combo before gearing/stalling the car up, is to ensure proper matching and saving $$$.

I had 3.73s when I had to A4 in my car and loved them around town, although once on the highway I absolutely hated them. 4.10s would be way too much IMO

No 4.10's in an A4 for me, if you drive it daily. You will be way up in the RPM band at highway speeds. If you're building a 427, save for a 9inch and put 4.10's in there.

What? I agree with you on the gears, but a stall should not be the last thing to be done by any stretch. The cam you have in mind should be factored in when you purchase the stall, but running a cammed A4 without a stall is not fun.

i very rarely drive on the highway so thats not an issue. just looking for soemthing a little more fun

Well, I come from the LT1 crowd, and its a lil different from LS1 cars in regard to stall speed.

For example, he is talking future project of a 427, which is serious bucks, so most likely it will be a 402/408 motor. The desired stall is going vary, every combo is going to demand a different stall speed.

If he wanted a garden variety stall converter that will work well with a stock block, mild cam, he would be 3000-4000 stall. But that stall in a 427/408/402/383 car is going to react differently, at that point he may not even have a 4l60e in the car, it maybe a th350/400. God knows once the tq management is removed all 4L60e's are suspect.

I have read to many stories where they never put enough or the cam mild cam in the car worked well with the mild stall but the ms4 now in the car really needs a loose converter. Thats just extra time and extra money that has to be spent.

Ive built my LT1 car up to the point where many of my future paychecks have already been called for so if I can pass along some advice I will.

But like you said when you buy a stall you should factor in a future cam, which unfortunately, not everyone does it.

i'd hold off on that man...

do some more research. i've seen a few stock internal ls1's on 26" tires not do any better with a 4.10 vs. a 3.73.

if you plan on putting a large cam in the motor then i say go 4.10's... but if you're planning on staying stock internal for a while, i wouldn't waste the gas money for minimal (if any) gains.

I have been running 4.10's since last Feb. I have 11,000-miles on them, I daily drive my car. But really it comes down to personal preference. It does turn alot on the highway but I wouldn't go back.

KingdingdongSS Jan 16, 2007 08:57 PM

thanks guys

I am running a 224/224/114 cam, 26X10.5x 16" mickey et streets. the stall flashes @ 3600 and I have 4.10 gears. I pull through the 1/4 with no problem. Out the hole its a bat out of hell. If you are paying someone around 800.00 to do the work with parts I wouldn't do it. Get a better rear if you are going to give the motor more power. The 10 bolt can last but how long is a gamble.
