Default Tranny and D.S. length issues...

D&D just rebuilt the tranny and I installed the Cartek clutch with new hydraulics (and adj. master cylinder). I just finished and wanted to test it before I let it off the stands. Now, the car pops out of third and is making strange noises when I release the clutch. All the other gears seem to be O.K., but it just doesn't feel right so I played with the master cylinder until I felt it was adjusted right. I looked under the car at the driveshaft and it looked like it was too far in (only about an 1 1/2" of the yoke was sticking out). So next I took out the driveshaft and put a seal (to stop fluid from coming out) on the tranny and it shifts fine in every gear and has no strange noises w/o the d.s. in at all!

I guess I need the driveshaft shortened, but why was O.K. before? I already had it shortened before for the 12 bolt and 1350 yoke.

Also, am I right by thinking that the driveshaft will only push farther in when I lower the car on the ground? And just how much is the d.s. supposed to stick in the transmision?

Thanks,
Joel

If you don't get a response here, email Fireball. I think he may have went through a similar issue.

try jacking your car up and leaving your rear suspension loaded (jackstands on the axle tubes. now undo the ujoint straps at the rear and see how much play you have in the driveshaft (how far you can push it in the rear). If you can't push it in far enough to remove the ujoints from the yoke (so the driveshaft can drop down from the rear) you may be too long. when you hit bumps or when the rear twists under acceleration you may be bottoming out the driveshaft. I had problems with my last 2 trannies which haven't been replicated since I had a custom driveshaft made that allows me to do what I just decribed above

Hope this helps <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

What Fireball said makes sense to me. 2 long or 2 short = problems. But there's a -little- leeway there.

Hey Fireball-

I did what you said and the driveshaft does come out fine with the rear end loaded, so who knows?

I went ahead and actually took it out on the road and it feels a lot better, except for third gear. This really stinks because this is the problem I was having all along (even before any modifications were done to the car). Third just pops out at low RPM's and is almost impossible to down shift in to. I must say it is a little better, since I can go in to third at about 3000 and up under light acceleration, but it is still not good enough. The Cartek feels excellent, so I guess I'll be calling D&D in the morning. Anyways, thanks for your help.

P.S. I did get them to install the harder shift fork, but they told me mine was not bent to begin with (I though that was odd). Plus I told them exactly what was wrong with third and that I do race the car, so I am just at a loss as to why the same problem continues.

Joel
