Default What rear end do we really got????

What rear end do we really got is it the 7 1/2 or the 7 5/8 because i was reading about the Monte Carlo SS from the 80's how they upgraded their rear end from the 7 1/2 to a 7 5/8

I've heard they have both but the 7.5 seems to be the consensus. Doesn't matter tho. They both suck.

I've heard both...doesn't really matter though. An "upgrade" to 7 5/8" isn't much of an upgrade if you ask me...

In the article it seemed that the Monte Carlo SS owners were so happy because their new rear end was supposely stronger.

I know its not really and upgrade, but just wanted to know. Maybe this rear end would have had lasted longer for some people here.

They are nearly the same anyway. The gears are identical in diameter even though they go by 2 different names, the only difference is the axle spline. 7.625 has 28 spline, and the 7.5 has 26 spline. GM changed the part numbers for the gears but they are the same for both. If you were to find an older set of 3.73's from a Monte SS and compare them to a set of 7.6 3.73's from a later S10 you would see they are the same aside from a difference in the shape of the pinion shaft(not the actual gear part) that has no effect on performance.

Last year for the 7.5" rear was 1984. They "upgraded" to the 7.625" in 1985. So all 1985-2002 "small" 10 bolts are correctly termed as 7.625", even though many still call them 7.5". Regardless, all parts are interchangeable.

89 was the first years for the 7.6, that was the change to 28 spline.

Why couldnt Chevy be smart and at least have installed a 8.5 rear end like the Grand Nationals?

I'm no rear end expert but even I can tell you that one friend...the almighty dollar. It's all about saving money and pinchin pennies when you can and that's just one of the things they probably felt they could leave to the aftermarket and I say DAMN them for it!

You're half right. 89 was a change-over year to 28 spine axles, but the 7.5" to 7.625" was in 1985 - do some research...
